The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state-of-the-art in modeling and simulation tools and processes to optimize a Sharrow ship propeller design to improve ship performance by enhancing propulsion efficiency and reducing energy loss. Key areas of investigation will include
- analysis of open water characteristic curve
- developmental designs and test articles for subscale propeller evaluation
- analysis from small subscale ship models to full scale on special mission ships as risk reduction prior to building prototypes
The overall goal is to provide a common set of modeling and simulation tools and processes to optimize future ship designs that directly enhance performance, longevity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
