The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to define and demonstrate a scalable model for deploying integrated expertise to address critical challenges in nuclear vessel disposition, including inactivation, defueling, decommissioning, and disposal processes.

The project team will be expected to have expertise in proactive risk assessment protocols, standardized approaches to nuclear material management and environmental compliance, and expanded data analytics capabilities to support informed decision-making across the disposition lifecycle.

Specific objectives will include:

  • develop a structure for establishing a targeted subject matter expertise workforce to address high-priority challenges of nuclear aircraft carrier inactivation, defueling, decommissioning, and commercial shipbreaking and disposal
  • apply a proven, structured methodology to analyze complex regulatory, technical, and environmental problems, guide solutions, and establish sustainable processes compliant with all applicable statutes and nuclear regulatory requirements
  • demonstrate the improved model’s effectiveness across the full spectrum of nuclear regulatory compliance, radiological safety, environmental stewardship, and inter-agency and contractor coordination
