The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to develop two methods to reduce the cost and schedule of manufacturing and sustaining parts for military ground vehicles that have traditionally been made using metal castings. These two methods will both utilize additive manufacturing (AM) but in different ways. Both methods are considered to be at the Pre-implementation Level and are desired to at least be at Tier 1 by the end of the project.
- Method 1 – Print the part directly: Develop a data-driven framework to digitally validate AM parts to shorten the physical testing/validation cycle.
- Method 2 – Print the casting tooling: Develop a workflow for designing, simulating, and using 3D printed tooling to shorten the schedule required to produce the parts via the original manufacturing methods.
