The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to improve the sustainability and/or productivity of coatings while maintaining the expected properties and performance for a variety of applications. This will be achieved with two key focus areas related to coatings technology: cure chemistry and binder design.

Specific goals include:

• Identification of end-use applications that could benefit from coatings with increased productivity and/or improved sustainability (such as but not limited to powder, refinish, industrial, or automotive applications)
• Identification and evaluation of cure chemistries and binder chemistries with improved EHS risk profiles and/or improved sustainability attributes (e.g. low VOC, low energy cure) compared to incumbent systems
• Development of binder/polymer design for application, cure, and end-use properties
• Expansion of fundamental understanding of factors driving cure
