The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state-of-the-art in new environmentally compliant coating processes against existing SAE 2406 hard chrome plating and demonstrating improvements in performance. This effort will validate and demonstrate a unique non-chrome plating solution that is an environmentally compliant replacement for SAE 2406 hard chrome plating.

Special emphasis will focus on exploring innovative solutions to these technical areas associated with current hard chrome plating challenges:

A viable, high-performance coating process that uses an energy-efficient manufacturing process and meets performance requirements of SAE 2406 including adhesion, wear and corrosion resistance.
Easy-to-adopt and scale up manufacturing processes that reduce or eliminate the use of harmful substances.
Finished parts and components that are more reliable and require less downtime and costs for maintenance activities.

If you feel your organization has the technical capabilities and would like to be considered for this project, please complete the form below and upload your organization’s technical capabilities statement.

Interested Submissions Due by 4/23/25.
