The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance from pre-implementation level to a Tier 1 level the ability to fabricate large plate steel to support specific applications of this material. The industry partner will validate the capability to produce a FeNiCo steel product with exceptional ballistic and blast performance that meet pre-defined specifications. The overall goal will be to scale-up a high performance FeNiCo Steel armor alloy from 48”x1”x48” plate to wide plate at >96” wide x1” thick x >96” length plate.

Specific objectives include the following.

  • Validate a lean and efficient process flow path that integrates well with plate producers to reduce complexity and cost.
  • Evaluate reduced cost feedstock as a function of mechanical properties relative to AerMet® 310 to allow for greater adoption.
  • Evaluate leaner alloy chemistries as a function of mechanical properties relative to AerMet® 310 to allow for greater adoption.
