The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to advance the state-of-the-art in mineral extraction technologies and processes in domestic mining sites. The project would serve as proof-of-concept for scalable, cost-effective critical mineral recovery processes that integrate advanced extraction technologies and hydro-metallurgical processes.

The selected industry team must have expertise and knowledge of critical mineral mining and refining, extraction, hydro-metallurgical processes, and recycling alongside existing facilities to be modified for refining optimization purposes.

Phase II will demonstrate and optimize a domestic process for recycling government-furnished germanium-bearing scrap into optical-grade germanium ingots.
