The US Navy is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to mitigate the effects of sand ingestion in aircraft engines operating in harsh sandy environments, to reduce their maintenance and sustainment costs, and improve the safety, reliability, and readiness of fleets. Specifically, its goal is to accelerate technology maturation of an advanced hybrid inlet protection system to facilitate future fleet implementation of a hybrid inlet separator design.
