The US Navy is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to mitigate the effects of sand ingestion in aircraft engines operating in harsh sandy environments, to reduce their maintenance and sustainment costs, and improve the safety, reliability, and readiness of fleets. Specifically, this initiative is intended to accelerate technology maturation of the advanced hybrid inlet protection system to facilitate future fleet implementation of a hybrid inlet separator design. Phase II will work to develop the mechanical and CFD models needed to generate the design requirements that will be validated and are required to enter full scale testing.
