The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance and demonstrate a passive radio frequency identification (pRFID) capability that automates tool and property inventory tracking for a specific facility, thereby creating an actionable system for real-time tool and property accountability.

Specific objectives include:

  • Automate the beginning/end-of-shift, task-based, and monthly toolbox inventories.
  • Make existing property tags actionable via added reader infrastructure, providing read-only real-time visibility to tagged property.
  • Integrate with hand receipt accountability and the tool room issue/turn-in workflow so RFID augments, and does not conflict with, established tool control.
  • Provide an automated foreign object and debris (FOD)-prevention control verifying tool accounting before aircraft/component movement, reducing lost-tool FOD events and risk.
  • Strengthen auditability via time-stamped, location-referenced event histories supporting investigations, cyclic tool-room inventories, and property audit/financial liability investigation of property loss (FLIPL) processes.
  • Establish a secure, MIL-STD-130N-aligned, RMF/STIG-accredited, DISR-compliant integration path replicable across MRO facilities.
