The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to operationalize a government-directed mission capable (MICAP) remediation process that uses modern digital engineering to clear out microelectronics obsolescence backlogs. Instead of relying on the old, expensive “build-test-fix” hardware cycle, this project will use virtual verification & validation (V&V) to get replacement designs right the first time.
Specific project objectives include:
- Standardize the Workflow: Establish a repeatable digital reverse-engineering process that allows the government to efficiently modernize legacy “black box” components.
- Implement Virtual V&V: Use high-fidelity simulation and emulation to validate component designs virtually, cutting down development timelines and eliminating the need for expensive physical re-spins.
- Secure Data Rights: Deliver complete, government-owned Level 3 TDPs, including native electronic design automation (EDA) models and source code, to break vendor lock and enable future competitive reprocurement.
- Clear Current MICAPs: Fabricate and deliver 600+ replacement parts to resolve immediate, critical parts shortages on priority platforms.
