The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to develop high-temperature resistant coatings to improve the safe operation and fire protection for EV and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The overall goal is to develop next-generation intumescent solutions that are melamine and borate-free while maintaining or even exceeding fire resistance performance. These novel coating materials must provide:
- battery thermal runaway prevention for EVs
- protection against hydrogen embrittlement for hydrogen-powered vehicles
- effective performance at cryogenic temperatures
