The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to build a pilot version of a hull inspection and repair robot capable of in-theater inspection of a vessel’s hull for damage and performance of repairs.

Additional key objectives includes:

  • Demonstrate the robot’s ability to attach to the hull, create a seal, and establish a stable habitat in the field
  • Demonstrate the robot’s ability to ‘wash off and recover’ by establishing coordinate markings
  • Demonstrate the robot’s ability to utilize Non Destructive Testing (NDT) to characterize defects (e.g. size, shape, orientation)
  • Demonstrate the robot’s control system, including the repair simulations in the Digital Twin
  • Demonstrate the repair quality, with mechanical tests of the repaired object
  • Demonstrate the robot’s ability to capture all ‘wastage’ associated with repairs
  • Demonstrate the robot’s ability to provide in-situ OQE associated with repairs

Phase II will build on the successes of Phase I and work toward delivery of a field-proven robotic repair system capable of performing in-water repairs on active Navy vessels.
