The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance casting and foundry manufacturing technologies by integrating specific technologies into a modular, scalable digital foundry system that can be set in forward type environments. The desired technologies include:

  • Sensorized telemetry and foundry environment control monitoring
  • Automated cut-off and grinding post-processing
  • Modified off-the-shelf stereolithographic 3D printers for large-format molds
  • Digital inspection for foundry automation
  • Castings up to 50lbs in weight

The resulting foundry would have the ability to work with the following alloy types:

  • Steel Alloys: ASTM A356, AMS 5336
  • Nickle Alloys: AMS5878, AMS5891, AMS5377, AMS 5404, AMS5383, AMS5373
  • Stainless Steel: AMS5355, ASTM A747
  • Aluminum: AMS42185
