The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to modernize manufacturing and repair capabilities with integration of digital tools and Industry 4.0 solutions for post processing of large components. The overall goal is to develop a digital platform for coupling data streams from scanning, modeling, machine process information, and post-build information for advanced manufacturing.
Specific goals include:
- Developing a multi-process production cell with robotics for scanning, machining, finishing, additive manufacturing and inspection of large castings.
- Integration of automation and controls to enable closed loop process control and autonomous operations of the cell.
- Developing a production cloud solution capable of hosting CUI data and interacting with the automation systems when deployed.
- Developing a full production cell concept demonstrated for a specific component of interest, obtained from a selected casting company.
- Developing a secure environment to handle CUI and NNPI data.
Phase II will run concurrently with Phase I and expand on the previous work to develop an installed production system at a selected castings supplier. In addition, it will further advance the development of autonomous operations, secure cloud development and implementation, and testing on sample components.
