The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMAinitiative to expand US based alloy processing options and creation of specialty plate alloys that offer weight reduction, cost savings, and field repairability for vehicle fleets. The overall goal is to demonstrate the fabrication of large steel plates with optimized heat treatment for the best combination of strength, hardness, and toughness at size for armor plate manufacturing and repair applications.
Phase II will build off the successes in Phase I and produce more relevant test articles for ballistic and blast testing that will demonstrate the performance benefits of the FeNiCo Ultra High Strength advanced steel. In addition, the work will demonstrate fabrication methods that can be applied to the fabrication of relevant structures.
