The U.S. Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to determine the feasibility and benefits of replacing a proprietary OS currently residing on a legacy vehicle with an open source-based operating system. This effort will assess if the open system platform approach is robust and flexible enough to integrate major subsystems that are fragmented throughout the vehicle and to see if a common code base can improve cyber security and maintainability while reducing life cycle costs.
