The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to execute directed coatings and corrosion repairs employing innovative materials and processes introduced during Phase I and Phase II while integrating corrosion assessments during scheduled maintenance periods and other opportune pier-side availabilities. These assessments will focus on evaluating workforce proficiency, the effectiveness of current maintenance practices, and potential system vulnerability to corrosion requiring further analysis. A key goal is to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of using swift warship action on rust mitigation (SWARM) techniques at pier-side opportunities to significantly accelerate corrosion mitigation efforts.
Phase III will expand on the work completed during the previous phases, demonstrate more efficient maintenance practices that limit corrosion, and execute a phased implementation of demonstrations centered on operationalizing the SWARM Method within existing maintenance constructs.
