The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to develop low-cost isotropic and mesophase pitch-derived synthetic graphite and battery anode-based materials.

Phase IV will build on the successes of earlier phases and focus on transitioning pitch-derived battery material development toward scale precursor production, industry-ready quality and process controls, synthetic graphite material validation, and customer-facing lithium-ion battery application assessments.
