The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to perform iterative, rapid scale-up R&D activities targeted at utilizing various steel alloys and product forms through domestic manufacturing at every level of maturity. These activities will be designed to identify and establish processing parameters, assess performance issues of prototype alloys related to industrial scaling, and include the existing domestic manufacturers in the critical aspects of the alloy development process to ensure capability in the targeted design space.
Specific objectives will include:
- Provide prototype material to aid in development of new steels for high-strength, high-toughness applications
- Identify, test, and verify the industrial-scale manufacturing parameters for advanced structural steels in the US domestic supply chain
- Identify deficiencies in the existing US supply chain for these types of materials in various product forms – notably plate, castings, forgings, and weld consumables – which may increase the risk to DOD or commercial use in the near- and long-term
- Engage US steel suppliers and workforce to develop and maintain basic manufacturing and Research and Development (R&D) knowledge base required for structural steel industrial maturity moving forward.
