The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to demonstrate the systematic build out of manufacturing capability and capacity of a specific applied materials processing facility. The overall goal is to demonstrate a fully operational facility capable of executing repeatable, Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) workflows that integrate seamlessly into domestic production lines.

The industry team will be expected to provide a roadmap for rapid scale up, qualification, and certification of critical ferrous and non-ferrous alloy systems.

Additional project goals include:

  • Expand Facility Operational State: The increased melting capability will include non-ferrous melting capacity up to 3,000 lb. and steel melting up to 6,000 lb.
  • Accelerate Materials Transition Pipelines: Enhance the ability of the domestic industrial base to rapidly iterate, certify, and transition advanced manufacturing methodologies directly into commercial supply chains and weapons platforms.
  • Standardize Copper-Based Alloy casting: Formulate an advanced manufacturing and accelerated qualification pathway that enables the rapid, repeatable casting of copper-based alloy critical components.
  • Demonstrate Full-Scale Component Prototyping: Advance manufacturing readiness levels through the successful production, testing, and geometric validation of full-scale first-article demonstration components for program of record.
