The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to advance the state-of-the-art in automated metals testing and analysis methods and processes. Current technologies and processes make new material and process certification time consuming and costly. The overall goal of this initiative is to compress this testing time from months to weeks and in some cases from weeks to days. With more testing done in a shorter period, volumes of data will be generated to define what will not work—forcing a path in alloy development to what will work.

Phase II will build off the successes of the previous phase and have the team negotiate and demonstrate the best value technology that will allow for a much faster testing process while increasing the quality of data that is produced. The goal for this phase is to effectively transmit the needed information to stakeholders and SMEs so that they can evaluate the mechanical test data and drive to an approved alloy solution.
