The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMAinitiative to create a prototype portable manufacturing system capable of advanced manufacturing to augment maintenance and sustainment activities in locations where standard supply chains have unacceptably long lead times for delivery. The overall goal is to create a system that can allow for rapid production of parts that enable at least temporary repair while new replacement parts are in transit. The system would support multiple maintenance and sustainment sites with rapid and accurate production of local new design parts and existing design parts from a government digital repository.
In Phase II, the team will expand upon the design and prototype from Phase I to further improve the ability to repair remotely and create a rapid portable manufacturing prototype for a particular weapons system component.
