The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state of the art in the advanced manufacturing and supply chain technologies and processes to demonstrate how reliability methods can help produce better products on schedule, within reduced costs, and require less maintenance. Using the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle as a surrogate, the goal of this initiative is to rapidly identify manufacturing and supply chain risks related to critical electronics and mechanical components, retooling and reestablishment of the production line, and updating workflow packages and instructions.
Specific objectives will include:
- Run multiple simulations to determine the most effective tooling and manufacturing processes for multiple components to reduce lead times and cost and maximize efficiencies.
- Establish a reliable manufacturing line prototype that optimizes manufacturing throughput, supply chain resilience, and improves part quality.
- Create new assembly work instructions and manufacturing processes.
- Demonstrate the new reliable manufacturing line with manufactured representative system samples.
- Conduct First Article Tests and other quality inspections (as required).
- Benchmark manufacturing best practices to optimize supply chain, reduce manufacturing time and costs, and improve part quality.
- Refine and optimize processes to improve quality and repeatability across multiple components.
- Update component Technical Data Packages as required.
