The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to advance the state of the art in the advanced manufacturing and supply chain technologies and processes to demonstrate how reliability methods can help produce better products on schedule, within reduced costs, and require less maintenance. Using the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle as a surrogate, the goal of this initiative is to rapidly identify manufacturing and supply chain risks related to critical electronics and mechanical components, retooling and reestablishment of the production line, and updating workflow packages and instructions.
Specific goals for Phase II include:
- Establish a distributed manufacturing approach that optimizes manufacturing throughput, supply chain resilience, and improves part quality of critical components.
- Update assembly work instructions and manufacturing processes.
- Demonstrate the new distributed manufacturing process with manufactured representative system samples for each component.
- Update manufacturing best practices to optimize supply chain, reduce manufacturing time and costs, and improve part quality.
