The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to demonstrate how robotics and automation can improve maintenance, sustainment, and manufacturing operations for airplane depainting. Specific goals include:

  • Improve cycle times for engine container maintenance to allow maintainers to attend to other higher-value tasks that require more dynamic human thinking
  • Reduce workplace hazards caused by noise, hazardous contaminants from hexavalent chromium Cr6+ present in paint, and heat.
  • Create a more effective blasting solution that is safe, requires less maintenance and downtime, improving maintenance, sustainment and manufacturing throughput
