The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state of the art in advanced tools and processes to implement a scalable, risk-informed manufacturing ecosystem for transparent armor that integrates advanced materials processing, manufacturing controls, and life-cycle sustainment planning from the outset. The overall goal is to utilize advanced prototyping and manufacturing methodologies to demonstrate suitable materials that can minimize delamination, testing material feedstock properties as a function of lifecycle and handling, and evaluating optical, thermal, and life-cycle properties.

Specific objectives include:

  • establish a resilient supply chain of critical materials, standardized component architectures, and qualification pathways to enable rapid scaling without re-certification delays
  • ensure reliable production processes at near commercial volumes while maintaining consistent performance, cost, and long-term supportability for deployed applications
