The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to establish the processes, analytical tools, and decision framework required to proactively manage the diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages (DMSMS) risk of a specific aircraft platform. The technical implementation goal is to deliver a repeatable, data-driven construct that connects component-level obsolescence and supply risk to aircraft availability and mission capability.

Specific objectives include:

  • Establish a standardized and traceable inventory of known DMSMS issues mapped to platform systems, suppliers, and component characteristics
  • Quantify the mission impact, urgency, and primary drivers of known issues to support consistent prioritization and mitigation sequencing
  • Develop and apply a platform-wide method to identify component groups with elevated emerging DMSMS risk
  • Provide decision-ready analytical products, data requests, and follow-on actions for the highest-priority risks
  • Demonstrate a scalable approach that can be refreshed over time and adapted to other defense and commercial sustainment environments
