The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to deploy an airfield foreign object debris (FOB) detection and collection system known as the Surgical+Systematic “SuSy” solution.
The SuSy solution utilizes TREX radar sensors for a continuous “real-time surgical” remote detection of high-risk medium-large FODs coupled with a quick targeted removal, combined with a “periodic systematic sweep” for high-volume smaller FODs using an automated collection covering the entire surface of the apron/taxiway with modular collection mechanisms.
Specific objectives include:
- Prepare a specific installation site to enable use of the SuSy system
- Install required components
- Validate use of SuSy system for automated detection and collection of FODs
- Establish analysis for system’s impact on safety, cost, and adoption, including scalability of operations
- Identify best use cases depending on different airfields’ requirements, types of aircrafts, apron/taxiway/ramp/runway usage and environment
