The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to demonstrate a repeatable way to plan engine sustainment across contract costs, maintenance demand, and market conditions.

Additional key objectives include:

  • Establish a current baseline and high, medium, and low projected cost forecasts through the confirmed end-of-service date of the aircraft. Confirm the scope, collect historical contract and maintenance data, define the commercial service timeline, and identify relevant comparison programs.
  • Compare the cost of staying the course with practical contract, maintenance-capability, and engine-replacement options. Estimate five- and ten-year sustainment costs using the current contract structure, extend the model through the confirmed end-of-service date, and develop high, medium, and low-cost cases based on analysis of other late life programs.
  • Deliver a model and decision roadmap that can be updated as contracts, fleet use, maintenance needs, and supplier conditions change. Compare potential sustainment paths and identify the associated decision points, timing, cost ranges, benefits, and risks to improve long-term sustainment.
