Project Announcement: Aircraft Launch and Recovery Obsolescence Strategy for Improved Maintenance and Sustainment – Phase II

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to develop and demonstrate an obsolescence strategy for at-risk electronic components and systems. This initiative seeks to identify issues and effectively deploy resources to mitigate critical system risks stemming from the supply base.

The strategy will incorporate best practices from across commercial and defense industries to provide defined actions for finding parts and better preparing for obsolescence of specific electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) and advanced arresting gear (AAG) systems. The solution will allow the DOD to proactively manage electronics suppliers and seek alternatives before performance and financial burden becomes unsustainable.

Phase II will continue the implementation of the recommended strategies from the initial phase. This will include grouping parts to create a more efficient comprehensive strategy to address system-wide obsolescence mitigation. Key objectives of Phase II will include:

• Develop a preliminary estimate of obsolescence cost across EMALs and AAG parts
• Develop detailed business cases for mitigation strategies across identified part numbers across systems
• Build a budget input and funding roadmap to address obsolescence
