Project Announcement: Environmental and Corrosion Field Testing to Inform Advanced Coating and Applique Digital Models

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state of the art in the qualification and testing of advanced coatings through digital models. The overall goal is to harness the power of advanced testing techniques, data collection, and digital engineering processes, thereby enabling faster and more accurate selection of the optimal coatings and materials to improve the design and performance of current and future vehicle systems.

Using various wheeled and combat vehicles as surrogates, this initiative will leverage new testing techniques, data collection processes, and design tools to develop and assess emerging advanced signature management coatings and application techniques required to enhance components and reduce visual and infrared signature of vehicles. Special emphasis will be placed on determining advanced coatings which can prolong corrosion protection and reduce vehicle visual and thermal signature in extreme environmental conditions.

Special emphasis will be placed on delivering a consistent, repeatable, and reliable process for capturing field environmental and corrosion test data to better inform digital models needed to reduce the schedule and costs of designing new signature management and other advanced coatings.
